On Monday the 28th, I took an in-service for my PPS registration as required by the State of Virginia. I took the inservice with the Northern Virginia Security Academy Part of the inservice was to review previous incidents and decontruct them in order to see mistakes made and possible and necessary changes to security policy. One of the case studies was the recent attack on the Pope by a supposedly mentally ill women. Hindsight is 20/20 but it would seem that the security detail did not take the appropriate step to protect the Pope. First, the security detail should have been posted along the walk route and not just as part of the procession especially since the barriers where in fact a launch pad for the attack i.e. pews (Fortunately for the Pope, the security detail was close enough to stop a second attack from the women. ) The second seeming mistake was the security detail did not seem ready to deal with a second attacker as the first one was being taken down. They did take the women into a controlled position and they did surround the Pope but they did not appear to take the necessary steps to protect the Pope from a second or third attacker from the crowd. I am glad to read that the Pope's security is under review.
